Houtman Abrolhos

/haʊtmən əˈbrɒləs/ (say howtmuhn uh'broluhs)

plural noun
three groups of islands and coral-islet outriders lying in the Indian Ocean west of Geraldton, WA.
{named in 1619 by Frederik de Houtman, a Dutch sea captain, from his name + Portuguese abre olhos look out!}
The Houtman Abrolhos were reached and named in 1619 by Dutch captain Frederick de Houtman, in the Dordrecht. Pelsaert Island, in the group, was named after François Pelsaert, captain of the Batavia, which was wrecked there in 1629. Pelsaert went to Batavia (Jakarta) in an open boat for help, but a mutiny led to 125 deaths before his return later that year. Geelvinck Bay and Channel were named by Willem de Vlamingh, visiting in the Geelvinckin 1697. The Zeewyck was wrecked on islands in 1727. The islands are now a major source of rock lobsters; pearl farming is also important.
